PROJECT PARTS LIST:

Here is what my friends and family called the Honda 650 store. I spread it all out so I could visualize how much stuff I recieved for the money I spent. Then I cried.

Here is a picture of the main bearings as ordered from my Honda dealer. Can you tell which one is 20 years old? Still getting used to this whole bike thing, a lot different from cars. You have to order the bearings in individual half shells!!! WTF? And they want about ten bucks per half bearing! Thats about $180.00 for crank and rod bearings! At first I thought they wanted $10 per bearing, untill he told me I needed 10 bearings for the crank and 8 for the rods. Who the hell replaces only half a bearing??? Excuse me sir, I fryed only the upper half of my rod bearing??? What a scam. With cars you don't check the wear on the bearings or rings, you just replace them because their dirt cheap.

This is by far the best find for the money I have ever seen. Some guy was selling a NOS cylinder head on Ebay. Bid started at $25, nobody but myself even bid on it! I always wait until the last minute to bid so I don't jack up the price prematurly, but I didn't even have to here. $25!!! This thing lists for $950 at my Honda dealer. Pics of it are here, I don't even want to use the thing it's so nice.

Here is a replacement right hand switch I got from the U.K. Notice it has the cam switch in the middle that allows you to turn off the headlight or turn the pilot light on. Neato, eh?

Although it saved me a lot of polishing time, that is not the reason I bought this NOS clutch cover from the U.K. When I was beadblasting the old cover, I apparently forgot about the two needle bearings that allow the pivot shaft to funtion. Needless to say they made a pleasant grinding sound when moved, and Honda doesn't even sell them! Doh!

Here are my "new", yet old case guards. I really can't say I'm a big fan on case guards, (especially those huge honkin guard rails) but these are rather low profile and hopefully will save all my hardwork when I crash. Me on the other hand, can be saved by nothing.

Below is a list of the parts that I am currently replacing or have previously replaced in my project bike. God save the queen. Mind you this list includes everything I have ever replaced since I have purchased it, and some things I have never used, for example two sets of pistons listed. It is very costly to *fully* restore a bike to it's prime, and when I am completed it should be in show condition, complete factory stock. Fortunatly, I have a 15% discount at my local Honda dealer. I suppose we have it for pumping endless money into their pockets. Parts for my bike, my brother bought a 2000 Ninja ZX-6R, and my father bought a 2001 Ninja ZX-12R from them too. The below price total is accurate plus or minus about $25 due to rounding of discount and tax percentages. Mind you, this list should not be attempted by yourself for your own bike, it will make you very sad, but at the same time it will become an obcesion to maintain it accurately.

While usually performing even the most complex repairs at my own leisure, I had to throw in the towel when I fist bought this bike. Having strictly worked on modern cars, I had a bit to learn. The bike wouldn't take a charge with a new battery, so naturally I decided that it would recieve a new alternator. WRONG! While most modern car alternators have the stator, rotor, brushes, and voltage regulator/rectifier in one simple compact unit, I discovered to my dismay that my Honda had all serviceable parts. Oh yeah, and they cost hundreds of dollars each! It's shocking really, when comparitively I can buy a remanufactured alternator for my car for around fourty dollars. Needless to say, after chasing this problem everyday for a month, I gave in. Trucked it over to the shop, and imagine this - the front calipers froze upon arrival! Might as well have those rebuilt too. Tires are bald and dry rotted, ah just replace them while I'm here. (etc. as seen below) Rang up a bill but eventually I could ride the damn thing. After forking over a chunk of money I figured I'd have a semi-reliable piece of equipment, utill next season when I blew the headgasket. Cam chain rattled around like all hell too, so I said #$@!% it and rebuild it this (2003) winter. It's going pretty good so far, mostly like rebuilding a car engine. Other suprises while reading the manual and disassembling include; "The cylinder sleeves come off the block???"
